The “Fifty Shades of Grey” book series has caused a shift no one saw coming.
Books that not long ago women would have read only in the privacy of their bathtubs are now being paged through on planes, subways and in waiting rooms. During a rather important and conservative work function, I watched the woman across from me lift the book at every break.
This series is now welcome pretty much everywhere but church. I guess this is a bit of a win for women, considering smart phones allow men (and some brave women too) to browse much racier material pretty much anywhere they please, covertly.
Daring to open the book in public is akin to saying, I don’t need to hide behind my phone, onlookers judge at will. E-readers, unfortunately, don’t get to make the statement, even though they paid for the book.
So if you’re considering reading this book, chalk it up to a research experiment. Tell onlookers you are studying how author E.L. James single-handedly changed our culture with a series of books. Fifty Shades of Grey Read Online
